Investigators are scrutinising Queensland’s main north rail line near Bundaberg to discover why high-speed passenger tilt train derailed, injuring about 100 people, just before midnight yesterday (Monday, November 15).

Seven of the nine carriages from Queensland Rail’s (QR) Cairns tilt train derailed at 11.55 pm between Bajool and Berajondo, about 50 km north of Bundaberg.

About 12 people are reported to have suffered serious injuries in the incident, QR said.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and QR investigators have yet to determine what caused the derailment or at what speed the train was travelling when it left the track.

However, QR has confirmed that the accident occurred on a 150 km/h-rated section of the rail track.

QR’s chief executive, Bob Scheuber, told the ABC this morning that the train was on a good quality section of track, which had heavy-duty rail and concrete sleepers.

QR said it has re-routed other freight and passenger rail services while it clears the derailed carriages and repairs damage to the track and ballast.

It is not known when the track will reopen.
