Queensland Rail has confirmed that it still has 100% of the coal transport business in Queensland.

It was continuing to expand its coal rail network as planned, QR spokesperson Garry West told Lloyd’s List DCN yesterday (Wednesday, April 16)

Any competition from Asciano’s rail transporting arm Pacific National was “a fact of life”, he said.

“There’s been deregulation since 1995 and certainly Asciano operates in Queensland already with interrnodal services,” Mr West said.

“(Asciano) has made statements about its intentions with coal but we’re facing competition everyday and have done for sometime, and we’re responding to this by growing and that’s the way to do it.”

Mr West said QR’s expansion into the Hunter Valley would also ensure the company’s success.

“We’re growing outside of Queensland as well, our bulk business separate from coal and our intermodal business that we started, what we call East West Services, which we started last year,” he said.

The East West Services, which carried containers from Melbourne to Perth, would ensure QR’s business remained diversified, Mr West said.
