QR and P&O Trans Australia have revealed plans to build a jointly-operated rail hub at Yennora in western Sydney, to begin operation over the next three months.

POTA, a joint-venture of Kaplan Equity and DP World, will operate an intermodal terminal on behalf of both parties and will begin a rail shuttle service between the hub and Port Botany, a distance of about 30 km.

The pair aims for 10 train services through the hub each day.

POTA managing director Paul Digney said yesterday (Tuesday, March 25) that the all-rail service would be more reliable and would link with QR’s existing domestic container haulage.

QR’s freight general manager Stephen Cantwell said the Yennora site was an interim step towards the creation of a much larger metropolitan hub at Moorebank, announced late last year.

Stockland and Kaplan are presently working on the 83-ha Moorebank development, which could take up to five years to begin operation.

“We have always said that key pieces of infrastructure and complementary partnerships would be important component parts to QR’s success,” Mr Cantwell said.

“Following the recent launch of our Cairns to Perth service, this announcement provides further evidence of our determination to establish an alternative national rail option.”
