Each year, the Permanent Way Institution of New South Wales (PWI NSW) gathers together professionals who are shaping the future of rail.
This year’s gathering was no different, highlighting those whose lifelong commitment and leadership have made a lasting impact on the industry.
A memorable highlight was the presentation of PWI Life Membership to Julian Sharp from CPB Contractors, Daniel Collison from BG&E Consulting Engineers, Mark Butler from WSP, Scott Chapman from the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), and Patrick Man from John Holland.
These distinguished members have each dedicated decades of service, passion, and technical excellence to the rail sector. Their leadership and influence span projects, organisations, and generations – from advancing infrastructure to mentoring the next wave of engineers and maintainers.
Collectively, their efforts embody what the PWI stands for: professionalism, collaboration, and a steadfast commitment to continuous improvement. Whether through on-the-ground innovation, managing complex programs, or advocating for safety and standards, each Life Member has contributed uniquely and enduringly to the strength of the Institution and the rail industry.

This year’s conference also recognised Howard Collins OBE from Transport for New South Wales and Matt Longlands from Sydney Trains with Honorary Fellowships. Their leadership and dedication continue to inspire across the transport sector. Both have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to excellence and to enhancing rail in New South Wales, embodying the values of integrity, vision, and service that define the PWI.
The recognition of these individuals as Life Member and Honorary Fellow underscores the PWI’s dedication to celebrating those who lead by example and devote their careers to improving the way we build, operate, and maintain our rail networks.
Looking ahead, the achievements of this year’s awardees serve as a reminder that rail is built on people, those who innovate, teach, and lead with purpose. Their contributions form the backbone of an Institution that continues to grow, evolve, and inspire.
We look forward to sharing a detailed overview of the 51st PWI Conference in early February. Stay tuned, as there are many more details to come.
