Green groups are claiming victory in their protest against the transportation of cyanide by rail, despite failing in their bid to stop a train in northern New South Wales last night (Thursday, March 22).

Nimbin-based Cyanide Watch had told local media that it would block the Pacific National train at Kyogle, 190 km into the train’s 950-km journey to Sydney, when it moved through the Richmond Valley at 8 pm.

The group – which organised the protest to coincide with the UN’s World Day for Water – said the cyanide would pose a threat to local water supplies should the train be involved in an accident.

About 20 police lined the rail tracks to prevent up to 50 protesters from accessing the train, which slowed but did not stop.

The protesters had intended to use distress flares, as part of a peaceful protest, to ensure the driver knew that they would be blocking the track.
