Recent growth in the North West Queensland Minerals Province (NWQMP) has prompted the Australian Transport Energy Corridor (ATEC) to reconsider a railway link which would connect Mount Isa to Darwin.

ATEC spokesman Everald Compton told the ABC that the NWQMP, centred in the Mt Isa-Cloncurry region, was neglected due to its isolation but had the potential to be a powerhouse in Australia.

“It’s obviously an underdeveloped area of Australia – someone should be doing something about it,” Mr Compton said.

“It should be one of the powerhouses of Australia and I think we all might want it to happen sooner rather that later.”

Mr Compton said a railway link had been considered before but recent growth would make it more feasible.

“We will certainly know by the end of this year and we’ll be communicating with the Mount Isa council and obviously the mining industry in that region,” he said.
