Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is pledging $1bn to connect southwest Sydney’s booming southwest region to the new Western Sydney airport by rail.
Albanese will make the announcement at the 2025 Airport City Summit in Warwick Farm today.
The $1bn in funding will be funnelled into buying land corridors for the creation of a rail connection between Bradfield Aerotropolis, Leppington and Macarthur.
A business case is currently being put together by the NSW Government and will decide whether the new connections are light or heavy rail.
The announcement comes as Labour hopes to secure key seats in Sydney’s southwest that are facing an election assault from Liberals and independents.
The metro currently runs from Tallawong to the city and beyond to Sydenham.
Earlier this month, it was announced that the extension of services from Sydenham to Bankstown has been delayed until 2026.
The government said the project’s complexity has been “compounded” by industrial action from rail workers, which has placed increased pressure on the construction and testing programs.
