Precinct Reference Groups (PRGs) are helping to shape the planning and delivery of Melbourne’s Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East from Cheltenham to Box Hill.
Six PRGs were established in September 2021 in Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill – providing an important forum for community representatives to share feedback and insights as SRL East is built.
The groups meet quarterly, and include representatives from community and business groups, local councils, institutions including universities, schools, and hospitals, as well as SRL team members and relevant state government agencies. Members have provided feedback on local priorities, site investigations and upcoming works.
A PRG workshop in Burwood formed a key part of community consultation on the new park and playground under construction between Cumming and Gillard Streets. Feedback showed barbecue facilities were a priority – and as a result, new barbecues and picnic tables are being built along Lundgren Chain Reserve.
As construction ramps up this year, PRG members will also take part in workshops and site tours. Recently, group members toured the Victorian Tunnelling Centre – the world-class facility where thousands of people are trained to work on Victoria’s major projects. Visitors walked through a replica rail tunnel and took part in augmented and virtual reality experiences to learn more about how projects like SRL are built.
The groups will work closely with PRGs and the wider community through the SRL East precinct planning process, starting later this year. Local feedback will be key to making areas around SRL stations even better places for communities to live, work, study and play.

Heatherton Community Reference Group
The first meeting with the Heatherton Community Reference Group (CRG) was held in March.
This year, early works will begin on the SRL East train stabling facility in Heatherton. This important facility will play a critical role enabling SRL’s fleet of new high-tech trains to begin services efficiently each day.
The Heatherton CRG will provide a regular forum for people who live, work or have an interest in Heatherton to meet the SRL team as the project progresses.
This group will provide feedback on the design and delivery of the facility, as well as helping to address construction impacts in the area.
