Port Hedland level crossing removed

The opening of a 95-metre road bridge has signalled the completion of works to remove a road-rail level crossing at Port Hedland.

WA transport minister Rita Saffioti opened the bridge on February 15.

The bridge will carry Great Northern Highway traffic over the rail line near the port. It was delivered via $18.7 million in funding from miner Roy Hill.

“The State Government, in partnership with Roy Hill, has delivered a critical piece of infrastructure that will deliver immediate benefits to road users from today,” Saffioti said.

Mining and Pastoral Region representative Stephen Dawson said the new bridge would also reduce the risk of road closures due to seasonal flooding.

“This much awaited upgrade will improve this major transport route and, more importantly, improve road safety by removing the risk of road-to-rail conflicts,” Dawson said.

“Pilbara residents and drivers who frequently cross this stretch of Great Northern Highway will be excited to learn construction of the bridge and removal of the rail crossing is complete.”
