Perth inner city rail project open to bidders

The Western Australian Government has called for expressions of interest in the $200m project to design and construct its inner city rail.

The project covers the section of the Perth-Mandurah railway between Narrows Bridge and Perth Central station, and connections to the northern suburbs railway.

It will include 1.6 km of tunnels and new underground station platforms.

The State Government said it wants a single contractor responsible for design and construction of all project elements and long-term maintenance on key items.

Three government rail project managers have recently visited southeast Asia and Europe to examine tunnel boring and contracting methods.

The expression of interest period closes on April 16, with two proponents then selected to prepare detailed bids.

Project completion is scheduled for 2006.
