A platform at Penrose Station on Auckland’s Southern Line is getting an extension to help service events at the nearby Mt Smart Stadium.
Work is currently underway to extend the station’s Platform 3 by 40 metres at its southwest end and 15 metres at its northwest end.
The upgrade is to cost $1.95 million and is being carried out by the construction company Libbet Limited.
When the extension is complete, 6-car trains will be able to stop at the platform, allowing more passengers attending concerts and sporting events at the stadium to get to and from the station with less crowding.
Other station upgrades to be carried out include the construction of a new staircase at the southwestern end of the platform, installation of new lighting, CCTV, and public announcement systems, and the widening of the existing access ramp.
The works are expected to be completed within 12 weeks. However, temporary scaffold structures will be erected to extend the platform in March to allow 6-car trains to service the station while several large events are held at the stadium.
