The Parkdale Level Crossing Removal Project in Victoria has come to an end, bringing the Frankston Line one step closer to being level crossing-free by 2029.
In August 2024, the dangerous and congested level crossing at Parkers Road, Parkdale was removed and the new modern Parkdale Station opened to passengers.
The new station, fitted with modern facilities, a forecourt, gathering places for locals and station precinct parking, will allow for the more than 20,000 daily drivers to pass through the Parkdale and Mentone crossings boom gate free.
Finishing works on the project continued after the opening of the station, including on the new community open space, as well as planting and opening sporting and recreational facilities under the new elevated rail.
At the opening, locals watched on from the new gathering circle as Mark Brown from the Bunurong Land Council performed a Welcome to Country.
In total, 27 level crossings will be removed on the Frankston Line and 17 new stations will be built. This is more level crossing removals than any other train line in Melbourne.
In total, the Victorian Government is removing 110 level crossings across Melbourne by 2030 under the Level Crossing Removal Project, one of the largest rail infrastructure projects in the state’s history.
The project has made Victorian roads safer by preventing 111 crashes and near misses every year and has slashed travel times in the morning by saving 55 hours of boom gate down time, according to the State Government.
