Golden West Resources was mulling whether to export Western Australian iron ore from its proposed Wiluna West project through Esperance or the planned Oakajee port, the miner said today (Tuesday, May 22).

Consultancy Longrun Transport Developments had found that Esperence offered port and rail costs of $25 a tonne, based on 10m tonnes a year.

This was described as “competitive”.

But Golden West managing director Gary Hutchinson said the miner was keeping its options open and Longrun would now examine Oakajee route via Weld Range

“We anticipate a saving of around 20% on this route as it is 200 km shorter than exporting through Esperance,” Mr Hutchinson said.

Golden West had also secured Snowden Consulting Group to undertake a scoping study of Wiluna West, east of Geraldton and 450 km north of Kalgoorlie, which is thought to have 50m tonnes of export ore.
