The National Transport Commission (NTC) and the Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board Australia (RISSB) are hosting a webinar to discuss governance model that establishes RISSB as the industry-led technical standards setting body.
Australia’s infrastructure and transport ministers have decided on reforming national rail governance to overcome 20 years of low adoption of rail standards.
The panel of key government and industry leaders will discuss the reforms which aim to help Australia’s rail industry shift from a voluntary approach to a strategic and coordinated national approach that binds public and private rail operators together.
Michael Hopkins, Chief Executive Officer of the NTC, Alan Fedda, Chief Executive Officer of RISSB, Lachlan McDonald, Executive Director of the Department of Transport and Planning Victoria and Wayne Johnson (GAICD), Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) will lead the webinar.
They will explain the thinking behind the new model and RISSB’s role within the national standards framework and show why harmonised standards are critical for improving interoperability, safety, and efficiency across Australia’s rail networks.
Attendees can also expect to hear about the exploration of opportunities for adopting and embedding mandatory standards.
The webinar will be held on Tuesday 14 October 2025 at 12pm.
