NSW hopeful Alstom wins Netherlands intercity deal

NSW Intercity Fleet contract candidate Alstom will hope to repeat recent success in the Netherlands, where it has just been awarded an €800 million deal to supply 79 intercity trains by operator NS.

The France-based train manufacturer was awarded the contract, which is for new generation intercity trains, earlier this month.

The trains will reach a maximum speed of 200km/h, and will be rolled out from January 2020.

They will run on the country’s national network on the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Breda line and on the Den Haag-Eindhoven corridor.

“We are pleased to be entrusted by NS the supply of a highly reliable, energy efficient, safe and comfortable transport system for their passengers,” Alstom’s senior vice-president for Europe Andreas Knitter said.

“With a total capacity of 25,000 seats the new Intercity trains we offer to NS are a concentration of the best proven technology from our Coradia platform.”

NS’s programme director for new rollingstock Roel Okhuijsen said Alstom would provide proven technology which is also ready for future development.

“We very much look forward to the cooperation in the coming years,” Okhuiksen said.

“From now on we need to push this project forward together with Alstom because we have an ambitious planning and a lot has to be done.”

Alstom is one of four manufacturers competing for the contract to deliver the next generation fleet for the intercity network in New South Wales. Downer/CRRC, UGL/Hyundai Rotem and Stadler make up the rest of the competition.

Correction: A previous version of this story listed the three competitors for the Melbourne HCMT contract, rather than the NSW intercity contract. This error has been fixed above.
