North Shore passengers first to benefit from Sydney Metro

Commuters travelling to and from stations north of Chatswood on Sydney’s T1 North Shore Line will soon see services doubled thanks to the closure of the Epping-Chatswood line ahead of its inclusion in the new Sydney Metro.

Services that usually run between Epping and Chatswood will be redirected to the northern fork of the T1 line from September 30.

The corridor between Epping and Chatswood is being closed and incorporated into the Sydney Metro Northwest route, so the metro line can be opened between growing suburbs in the north-west and Chatswood in 2019.

This will mean Sydney Trains services can be doubled to and from stations north of Chatswood, with services starting or ending at Gordon, Hornsby or Berowra.

It will also mean more AM peak hour services to the city for commuters from Mount Kuring-gai, Mount Colah, Hornsby and all stations between Wahroonga and Roseville.

In an additional change, Central Coast customers will the number of express services to the CBD doubled, with trains operating via Strathfield during peak hours.

Transport minister Andrew Constance said the changes would see the T1 North Shore and T1 Northern Lines to operate separately.

“Our focus has been to ensure services continue to meet demand,” Constance said.

“We know there will be disruption but once Sydney Metro opens in the second quarter of next year, there will be a new world class metro service between Sydney’s fast growing north west and Chatswood.”
