An old timber section of bridge built over the rail corridor at the Brisbane hamlet of Normanby will be removed to ensure the ongoing safety of pedestrians in the future.
The original structure, which connects to steel extensions to the bridge built over the Inner City Bypass and Legacy Way, was closed for safety reviews in October last year.
The assessment found changes to surface rail and associated overhead electrical infrastructure – due to be installed mid-year and as part of Cross River Rail works – introduced new safety risks in the future for pedestrians crossing over the live rail corridor.
Monitoring also found that the bridge was not a major thoroughfare for the wider Normanby community.
Given the potential safety risks, low community usage and the fact the bridge does not meet modern accessibility standards, the decision has been made to remove the old timber section of the bridge over the rail corridor.
The bridge is expected to be removed in June, with relevant stakeholders to be notified in advance.
As part of bridge removal works, wayfinding to direct the community to alternate corridor crossing points will be reviewed and updated where required.
The State Government will continue to work constructively with Brisbane City Council, which is currently master planning Victoria Park/Barrambin, to assist with the planning of improvements to active transport networks in the area.
The bridge is not listed on State Government, Brisbane City Council or Queensland Rail heritage registers.
