$45m Albury-Seymour rail upgrade completed
Work on the Albury-Seymour section of the Sydney-Melbourne rail upgrade has been completed.
The $45 million project saw 225,000 timber sleepers replaced by concrete sleepers during a four-month project which directly employed 120 people and used sleepers produced by Austrak’s Wagga Wagga factory.
Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) chief executive David Marchant said re-sleepering the section would improve the overall efficiency on the interstate network.
Installation of boom gates starts in NSW
The installation of boom gates and other safety measures at priority level rail crossings in NSW has begun. $42.7 million from the Federal Government’s $150 million Boom Gates for Rail Crossings Program has been allocated to upgrade safety around 55 high risk level crossings in NSW. Work has started at Bowral and Moss Vale with the installation of swing gates, lights and bells. The projects are being delivered by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC). Between July 2007 and June 2008 there were seven level crossing collisions in NSW, including one fatality.
Work on Maryborough’s Station Domain begins
Work on the $8 million Station Domain project at the historic Maryborough railway station has begun.
Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Regional Development Maxine McKew said that the project will deliver the Maryborough community a much-needed community hub, improve the forecourt to the station and support an estimated 57 jobs in its construction phase.
The Central Goldfields Shire Council is receiving more than $3.3 million in Federal funding for the project from the $1 billion Community Infrastructure Program.
The works will coincide with the return of a passenger train service from Maryborough to Melbourne in 2010.
