Bankstown Station’s new plaza and transit interchange officially opened to the public last weekend.

Delivered as part of the Southwest Metro project in Sydney, the new precinct will prioritise “seamless and accessible interchanges” with buses, trains, and three new kiss-and-ride parking spaces.

From later this year when new metro services start, the interchange will also welcome thousands of commuters each hour in the morning peak.

A second Sydney Trains entrance building provides direct access from the plaza to services on the T6 Lidcombe & Bankstown Line. The new entry features modern ticket gates with nine new opal gates and 18 secure bike parking spaces.

The 90-metre tree-lined plaza also creates a new direct pedestrian thoroughfare, linking the north and south sides of Bankstown.

This connects the town centre with residential areas, and it is hoped it will boost foot traffic for local businesses.

The new metro station, which is in its final stages of construction, sits at the southern end of the new precinct.

It will open once Southwest Metro services start in the second half of 2026.

Spaces in the plaza have been future-proofed for dining and retail opportunities, with new lighting, shaded seating, concrete benches and timber decking beneath the 150-year-old fig tree.

The opening was celebrated on Sunday March 22 with live drumming, information stalls and children’s activities.

The new precinct and station entrance buildings were built over 1.5 years with 1942 workers on site to deliver the transformation.

Constructing the precinct required removal of more than 50 metres of the former Sydney Trains platform and significant work to realign the Sydney Trains tracks to allow access to both platforms from the new entrance.

It is the largest upgrade to the station precinct since the station opened in 1909.
