New TAIC commissioner appointed

A new chief commissioner has been named to lead New Zealand’s Transport Accident Investigation Commission.

Former chief legal advisor for the Treasury Jane Meares was named as TAIC’s new chief commissioner by transport minister Simon Bridges on November 30.

Barrister Richard Marchant was also appointed as a commissioner. The appointments were made by the governor general on Bridges’ recommendation.

“Ms Meares has extensive legal and governance experience and sound leadership skills,” Bridges said. “Mr Marchant also brings governance expertise with 30 years’ experience in the legal sector.

“Together, these appointments will ensure TAIC continues to have the skills and experience it requires.”

Meares’ term expires in October 2021; Marchant’s in April 2019.

TAIC investigates transport incidents in the road, rail and maritime sectors, and is New Zealand’s equivalent to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
