New study promotes “Smarter Rail”

Remanufacturing bearings could be smarter than simply buying from scratch.

A new study by SKF Rail is talking up the role of bearing remanufacturing in terms of safety, reliability and efficiency.

The study is called Smarter Rail: Bearing Remanufacturing & The 100/100 business model.

It notes that wheelset bearings are among the most safety-critical components on rail vehicles.

It also notes the important steps that must be carried out correctly in order to ensure continued reliability and smooth operation, such as a clean environment, an effective inspection regime and axial clearance.

The study notes that sourcing spare parts can be time consuming and expensive, hence it can often be more cost effective and efficient for maintenance schedules to remanufacture rather than buy excessive new stock..
