Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) Authority transport planners have calculated how much time commuters will save when the first section of the SRL opens in 2035.
A new report, released by Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan and Minister for Suburban Rail Loop Harriet Shing yesterday, found that commuters travelling to various destinations along the SRL East beween Box Hill and Chelternham would cut up to 40 minutes from their trip.
Students travelling from Cheltenham to Deakin University in Burwood or to Monash University in Clayton on the SRL would arrive 40 minutes faster than they would using existing public transport routes.
Students travelling from Cheltenham to either Monash University in Clayton or Deakin University in Burwood would get there 40 minutes faster than on existing public transport options, and 24 and 29 minutes, respectively, faster than driving the route.
If they were to drive from Cheltenham, it would take them 29 minutes longer to get to Deakin University and 24 minutes longer to get to Monash.
All current journey times have been calculated using the Public Transport Victoria (PTV) app, at 8am, or with services as close to this time as possible.
People travelling the length of the SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill would save 33 minutes compared to travelling between those destinations on public transport today, or 30 minutes if they were to drive the route.

Minister for the Suburban Rail Loop, Housing and Building Harriet Shing said the Suburban Rail Loop will change the way that people live, move and work across Melbourne by connecting communities, delivering housing, and making it easier to get around.
“As Melbourne grows, it needs to grow well, and the Suburban Rail Loop will provide thousands of Victorians the same opportunities for home ownership as their parents had, closer to where they grew up.”
Tunnelling on SRL East will begin in 2026.
