Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport has reached another major milestone, with work underway to build the platforms at six new stations.
The new platforms are already in place at the future Bradfield Station, while the island platform at the Airport Terminal Station site is at least 50 per cent complete.
The platform at Airport Terminal, measuring 95 metres long by 10 metres wide, will be the largest on the line.
It is intended to provide additional space for passenger movement and those travelling with luggage.
The installation of the extra-large platform – which is double the width of the platforms at Gadigal Station – requires a 60-tonne crane to lower 119 precast concrete segments to the station floor, 25 metres below ground.
The segments, each weighing six tonnes, are then pieced together and secured in place with bolts and concrete to create the platform.
Earlier in August, platform installation also began at the Airport Business Park and Orchard Hills stations.
Work is continuing across all station sites, with concreting, steelwork, and formwork underway as main station structures begin to take shape.
Track laying is underway in both the north and south tunnels, as well as at the viaduct near the Warragamba pipelines and at the stabling and maintenance facility.
When complete, the new 23-kilometre Metro will provide 15-minute metro trips from Airport Terminal to St Marys, where passengers can join services on the T1 Western Line.
New metro rail extending between St Marys and Bradfield will become a transport spine for Greater Western Sydney, connecting communities and travellers with the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.
