The Territory Wildlife Park has announced the arrival of two new electric trains, replacing the diesel trains that have been a feature of the park since 1989.
The park, which is in Berry Springs 45 minutes south of Darwin, said the change has been made to reflect its ongoing commitment to sustainability and enhancing the visitor experience.
The electric trains are a major step in reducing the park’s environmental impact while offering a “quieter and more comfortable” way for visitors to explore the park’s landscapes.
The trains, which are valued at $350k each, are powered by rechargeable lithium batteries, with a five-year life expectancy.
They can seat up to 74 guests and come equipped with features such as a low-to-the-ground design for easy access, doors with a safety locking system and CCTV monitoring for added security across all carriages.
The new trains promise a “safe and enjoyable experience” for visitors, with rain curtains for added comfort during the wet season, while the hop-on and hop-off transport option makes it easier for visitors to travel between exhibits.
Suzana Bishop, the Department of Tourism and Hospitality’s Chief Executive Officer, visited the park to officially launch the trains on Friday.
She said: “The Territory Wildlife Park holds a special place in the hearts of Territorians, offering visitors a unique opportunity to observe native wildlife thriving in natural habitats and to connect with the diverse ecosystems that make our region so special.
“I encourage everyone to come and enjoy the new trains and explore all that the park has to offer. If you haven’t visited for a while or are hosting visiting friends or relatives, it’s a great opportunity to re-engage with this beloved facility.”
The Territory Wildlife Park is open daily from 9am to 3pm during the wet season and from 9am to 4pm during the dry season (except for Christmas Day).
