More car spaces at Merlynston

The Andrews Government has announced plans for more car parking at Merlynston station on the Upfield Line, in a bid to shore up votes ahead of the state election in November.

Labor has announced it will build up to 355 new and upgraded car parks at the station if it wins re-election on November 24.

Merlynston station sits in the electorate of Pascoe Valley, a Labor seat since it was established in 1985, won with a 68.8% two-party-preferred share in the last election by Labor MP Lizzie Blandthorn.

Blandthorn said on Tuesday she had been working to get new car parks at Merlynston for some time.

“I have been campaigning strongly to fix the Merlynston car park so I am very excited that we will seal the car park, provide more parking spaces and make the station safe with better lighting, CCTV and bike cages,” she said.

Currently, the 218 car parks at the station are full by morning peak, according to Blandthorn and state transport minister Jacinta Allan.

“Demand for parking at Merlynston station is growing each week,” Allan said.

“That’s why a re-elected Andrews Labor Government will deliver up to 355 car parks, providing much needed relief for locals.”v
