The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) said there had been only a minimal disruption to the Hunter coal chain following the derailment of a fully-laden train on the main rail artery on Thursday night (September 20).

The ARTC re-opened the track near Thornton, about 18 km west of the port of Newcastle, by midday yesterday.

A section of the track was damaged and seven wagons derailed, five having tipped over and spilled their load.

ARTC spokesman Brian Dale said some scheduled coal train services were lost during the peak passenger periods on Friday because coal trains had to be diverted onto the main line which normally handles passenger and general freight traffic.

Crews worked non-stop to re-open the track about eight hours ahead of the expected completion.

Pacific National is investigating the cause of the derailment.
