McGowan names Saffioti transport minister

New WA Premier Mark McGowan has named member for West Swan Rita Saffioti as the state’s new transport minister.

McGowan this week announced his first Cabinet of ministers, after Labor thrashed the Liberal National alliance in the state election last weekend.

Saffioti said she was “excited and humbled” to be assigned the new role.

McGowan made himself the minister for public sector management, state development, jobs and trade, and federal-state relations.

He named Ben Wyatt state treasurer and minister for finance.

Along with the transport ministry, Saffioti was also made minister for planning and lands.

“This is a Cabinet for the times,” McGowan said. “This is a Cabinet for the State.”

Australian Logistics Council managing director Michael Kilgariff praised Saffioti’s appointment.

“It’s especially pleasing that a single minister will be responsible for both the transport and planning portfolios,” Kilgariff said.

“One of the biggest challenges facing the logistics sector has been a continuing disconnect between those two key policy areas.

“Having a single minister responsible for both will prove an enormous advantage.

“In particular, we must ensure that planning policy takes adequate account of future freight needs, including the protection of freight transport corridors from encroaching residential and commercial development.”
