Five 129 tonne locomotives have been delivered to Whyalla, in South Australia, after a 2200km truck ride.
<span style="Times New Roman","serif"">Logistics and transport provider Toll moved the 22 metre locos via five separate truck journeys, from Maryborough, Queensland, to a customer in the South Australian port town.

<span style="Times New Roman","serif"">Toll did not specify who the trains were moved for.

<span style="Times New Roman","serif"">The $6m trains were moved only during daylight hours, and in South Australia needed police escort.

<span style="Times New Roman","serif"">Toll NQX’s South Queensland development manager, John Gunning, said the trains had to be delivered to South Australia via truck, due to Queensland’s different rail gauge to the rest of Australia.

<span style="Times New Roman","serif"">He said extensive planning was made before the operation, and a detailed strategy was developed prior to its execution.

<span style="Times New Roman","serif"">“In each case the bogies were removed to bring the overall travelling height down to less than 5m so we didn’t interfere with overhead lines, and the wheels transported on two separate trailers,” Gunning said.

<span style="Times New Roman","serif"">“We built special steel frames so the trailer could receive the trains without the bogies on. That also gave us something to secure the locomotives to.”

<span style="Times New Roman","serif"">The whole operation took around a week, with two 200 tonne cranes lifting the bogies from the trucks and onto the tracks, before the locomotive could be lowered onto the bogies.

<span style="Times New Roman","serif"">Every day for each journey, crews checked the trailers’ 98 wheels and tyres and ensured all restraints were secure.

<span style="Times New Roman","serif"">Toll NQX is a part of the larger Toll Group, and specializes in road transport solutions for freight moving across Australia.

<span style="Times New Roman","serif"">It employs roughly 1500 people and operates out of 24 depots around the country.
