<p>The Local Government Association unveiled its transport strategy at its national general assembly last week.</p> <p>The five-part plan calls on the Federal Government to work with councils to deal with transport issues over the next decade.</p> <p>ALGA president Paul Bell said some of the challenges ahead included the increase in freight traffic movement and land use planning.</p> <p>“Nearly every freight journey begins and ends on a local road irrespective of whether it travels by truck, rail, air or sea,” he said.</p> <p>“Local government is responsible for some 650,000 km, or nearly 80% of all roads, significant public transport infrastructure and more than 200 airports.”</p> <p>The strategy focuses on:</p> <p>• Local road funding and management</p> <p>• Urban transport</p> <p>• Mobility and access for regional Australians</p> <p>• Freight management and </p> <p>• The long-term financial sustainability of local government. </p> <br />
