Works continue in Dandenong South, with the new road bridge connecting Progress Street to Fowler Road taking shape.
In late June, following recent piling works, there were seven T-beams lifted into place to support the road bridge, weighing up to 40 tonnes and measuring 27.5 metres long. The beams were installed by a large 800 tonne capacity crane that weighed in at a massive 108 tonnes.
Underneath the bridge on either side of Eumemmerring Creek 790 tonne of rock has been placed ranging from 1m to 1.5m diameter rocks down to 20 millimetre stones. This will prevent erosion and retain the creek embankment complimenting the natural surrounds.
These works were carried out by a 25 tonne and a 14 tonne excavator which worked together to remove dirt from the area and place large amounts of rock into place. This will create the required flat surface and a new rock feature alongside the creek.
During construction, the team has also removed large amounts of dumped waste from sections of the creek, uncovering some old glass bottles and even parts of a dumped vehicle.
The bridge deck is now underway, and crews are continuing to work in the area.
As part of the design to close the Progress Street level crossing, the teams are also indenting parking on Fowler Road, which will increase the drivable width from approximately 8m to 10m to further improve safety and accessibility for all road users.
The Fowler Road–South Gippsland Highway intersection will also be upgraded and signalised with new traffic lights, improving traffic flow for businesses in the industrial precinct.
Project works will occur in stages to minimise disruptions, with the project team continuing to work closely with businesses throughout construction.
By removing eight level crossings in the Greater Dandenong area, the Victorian Government making journeys safer for all road users in the busy industrial area and slashing almost 6 hours of boom gate down time each morning.
