Early works to remove the level crossing at Old Calder Highway in Diggers Rest are now underway.
Two level crossings at Old Calder Highway and Watsons Road will be removed by 2025, with the replacement of new road bridges over the rail line.
In the coming weeks crews will undertake rail signalling, service relocation and overhead wiring works in the rail corridor and install signage.
Traffic will also be moved onto the new temporary diversion road on Old Calder Highway which will open in August, with a new roundabout to facilitate access into the site.
Site establishment works at the nearby Watsons Road level crossing removal will commence in the coming months.
In the lead up to major construction, community members are invited to apply for the Stakeholder Liaison Group (SLG).
The SLG which represent the views and interests of residents, business owners and community organisations throughout delivery. Nominations for the group close 11.59pm Sunday 4 August.
More than 8000 vehicles travel through the Diggers Rest level crossings every day. With 27 trains travelling through the boom gates during the morning peak, creating 36 minutes of boom gate down time.
These removals take the Sunbury Line one step closer to being level crossing free in 2025. Combined with the Metro Tunnel, more trains will be able to run more often on the Sunbury Line, changing the way people live, work and travel in Melbourne’s north.
