Iron ore rail operation hits 20m tonnes mark

The Australian Railroad Group (ARG) and Portman have topped 20m tonnes in hauling iron ore to the port of Esperance.

The operation began in 1994 with an initial target of 1.5m tonnes of iron ore railed from the Koolyanobbing mine to the port in the first 12 months.

Volumes have grown significantly in the last three years, and in August 2003 ARG set a monthly record of 458,000 tonnes.

Longer trains and increased wagon capacity helped lift targets, ARG said.
