The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has launched an investigation into the derailment of a coal train near Duaringa, Queensland, this week.

In the early afternoon of last Wednesday (24 January), 20 coal loaded wagons from an Aurizon freight train were derailed, with several falling over on to their sides. The locomotive remained on the tracks. The incident led to the blocking of the reciprocal line.

No injuries occurred in the derailment.

An engineering report, train crew interviews and other information will be gathered by an on-site ATSB team.

The investigation is expected to be complete by January 2019.
