Fremantle Ports has appointed Intermodal Link Services to manage the North Quay rail terminal in Fremantle.

The development is part of a broader initiative involving the CBH Group, Stevenson Logistics and South Spur Rail, which is aimed at increasing the number of loaded container movements on rail.

Details of the initiative were submitted to Fremantle Ports under the recently completed request for proposal process related to development of the Inner Harbour rail services.

The shift in container movements from road to rail will create greater efficiencies within the supply chain and will result in less congestion at the port and on metropolitan roads, providing a safer environment for all road users and lower supply chain costs for rail container traffic.

To help move a larger portion of the port’s container trade onto rail, the rail terminal and associated dual gauge rail link servicing Fremantle’s North Quay container terminals were completed in 2006.

It is anticipated that present rail services utilised by the CBH Group, Stevenson Logistics, Fremantle Link services and ARG will continue to serve the ports’ container trade.

Fremantle Ports chief executive Kerry Sanderson said the rail share for the port’s container trade had grown significantly this year and now represented more than 10% of containers being transported to or from the Inner Harbour terminals.

Intermodal Link Services was expected to assume management of the rail terminal within the next few weeks, she said.

“A number of issues need to be worked through with the State Government before longer-term arrangements can be put in place, but the interim appointment of Intermodal Link Services to manage and operate the terminal will help to sustain momentum in the growth of rail.”
