ICAC clears Scully over Menangle Bridge debacle

The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has cleared former New South Wales transport minister Carl Scully of any political skullduggery over the closure of the Menangle Bridge earlier this year.

However, ICAC condemned the Rail Infrastructure Corporation (RIC) for the quality of its ministerial briefings and its infrastructure management system.

ICAC investigators said there was "no evidence" that any "political considerations" had affected the way in which the RIC or Mr Scully responded to reports recommending closure of the bridge.

"There was no evidence that the decisions made by the RIC that closure of the bridge was unnecessary were based on any other factors other than a professional assessment of the safety risks represented by the bridge and an understanding of the relevant technical issues affecting the bridge," ICAC stated.

The investigation examined NSW opposition allegations that the Menangle Bridge was kept open to avoid political embarrassment so close to the NSW state election on March 22.
