<p>Up to 40 rail freight services across the Nullabor will be delayed until repairs to derailment damage allowed the reopening of the east-west line, it appeared this afternoon. </p> <p>The line between Port Augusta and Kalgoorlie would be closed to rail traffic until Saturday afternoon, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) said. </p> <p>The ARTC said that damage to the rail line caused by the derailment near Mount Christie in South Australia was “quite serious”.</p> <p>Two rail freight operators said that at this stage, their freight trains were waiting in Adelaide and Perth for the reopening of the line.</p> <p>ARTC spokesman Brad Emery said that in any 24-hour period, about nine freight trains would run along the track that had been damaged and all would be affected until the rail line was repaired.</p> <p>All SCT Logistics services scheduled to run along the east-west rail line – about four to five services a week – would be postponed, the operator said.</p> <p>“Like everyone – anyone trying to get across the Nullubor won’t be able to get through until the track is repaired,” SCT Logistics marketing manager Raelene McKinnon said.</p> <p>“We are still dispatching services here in Melbourne but they may be held over a little in Adelaide.”</p> <p>QR Limited senior media adviser Amanda Gray told <em>Lloyd’s List DCN</em> : “We have train services stowed in Adelaide and Perth, and will work together with our customers to make preparations for when the line has been cleared so we can immediately recommence our rail operations and address any backlogs.”</p> <p>Great Southern Rail (GSR) said it was forced to cancel an Indian Pacific service heading east from Perth to Adelaide today.</p> <p>Another two GSR services, one heading west from Sydney to Perth departing today and another heading west from Adelaide to Perth on Thursday, would also be affected, the operator said.</p> <p><em>Lloyd’s List DCN</em> was still awaiting a response from Asciano.</p> <p>At 11 am today, three cranes began work removing the damaged wagons and spilled goods near the Mount Christie loop, which is on the Tarcoola-Cook section of the line.</p> <p>About 300 metres of rail track west of the west end point had been severely damaged and was in need of replacement, an ARTC assessment determined yesterday.</p> <p>An additional 2.2 km of track on the east side of the east end turnout was damaged but could be traversed at a temporary speed of 20 km/h.</p> <p>The ARTC said that "wagon fall" from the derailment would also require significant recovery efforts.</p> <p>The SCT Logistics train from Melbourne bound for Western Australia derailed about 20 metres before the loop and 12 of the train’s wagons overturned.</p> <p>The derailment was one of a series of incidents to disrupt east-west rail services in the last 10 months.</p> <br />
