Inland Rail has shared some insights into how it transformed the Wangaratta Station Precinct in Victoria from vision to reality in a new video.
The upgraded railway station precinct officially opened in May 2025, marking the completion of major works on Inland Rail’s Beveridge to Albury (B2A) Tranche One project.
The works at Wangaratta were required to increase clearance on the existing North East rail line, to safely run double-stacked freight trains.
McConnell Dowell began construction in 2023.
Over the course of the project, two pedestrian footbridges were replaced with a new pedestrian underpass, the rail track was relocated to form the new west track parallel to the existing station platform, and accessibility was improved with ramps, lifts and stairs.
A new platform and car park were also built on the western side of the platform, Green Street bridge was replaced, and the rail tracks were lowered.
A spokesperson for Inland Rail said: “Wangaratta now has a modern, safer and more accessible railway precinct.
“Better town connectivity and liveability are just some of the lasting legacies we’re creating for regional Victorian communities.”
Wangaratta marked the fourth of Inland Rail’s sites in Victoria to be upgraded, following Barnawartha North, Glenrowan and Seymour-Avenel Road.
Almost 1650 people worked on Inland Rail’s first four sites in the state, including 59 First Nations people, 124 women, 39 apprentices, and 176 young adults under the age of 25.
More than 488 workers were from Wangaratta and more than 1570 workers were residents from across the region.
