Hope Downs could fund rail expansion

Partners in the Hope Downs mining project have indicated a willingness to fund any necessary expansion of BHP Billiton’s Newman railway to cart the additional ore, according to a report in today’s (Tuesday, November 11) West Australian .

Last week the WA Supreme Court granted the Hope Downs project third party access rights to BHP Billiton’s nearby Newman railway to haul the ore to Port Hedland.

But BHP-Billiton has suggested that Hope Downs may have to fund its own expansion because the rail line at present has no spare capacity, the newspaper said.

On Friday (November 7), Hope Downs project director Russell Tipper told Lloyd’s List DCN that although he welcomed the court’s decision the next move is up to BHP-Billiton.

"It’s really going to be a question of how BHP sees it," Mr Tipper said. "We are keen to have a chat with them but as yet we haven’t had a chance to sit down and have that chat."
