Half a million for Dynon just the start

The Dynon rail freight hub will get $500,000 in upgrades to improve the working environment for staff.

VicTrack and Freight Australia have agreed to upgrade facilities in the area, beginning with workshops, office buildings and environmental works at South Dynon.

State transport minister Peter Batchelor said the improvements are a precursor to the Dynon Hub Study on the future of rail links to the Port of Melbourne. This report will be completed shortly.

Mr Batchelor indicated that the State Government will continue to work with Freight Australia to attract more freight to rail.

The two groups could focus on it creating a direct rail link from the Port of Portland to the productive "green triangle" area of South Australia, through Mt Gambier and Heywood.

Mr Batchelor also said the government would help the Victorian rail industry to achieve its target of 30% of freight carried to ports by rail by 2010.
