Hai Win Darwin-Shanghai service carries record volume

The Northern Territory Government has confirmed that after successful trials, Hai Win Shipping has established a regular monthly service between Darwin and Shanghai.

Chief minister Clare Martin said the latest shipment, the eighth and largest, carried the equivalent of 213 containers.

"This record shipment and the start of a regular service are significant steps towards making Darwin the gateway for Asian trade to Australia," Ms Martin said.

"It’s a great vote of confidence in Darwin and the AustralAsia Trade Route."

She said two-thirds of this record cargo would be distributed across the country by rail, with the other third going by road.

Most of this freight would normally have been delivered into Australia via Fremantle or Melbourne if the Hai Win service did not operate, Ms Martin said.
