An improved grain season has bolstered the Australian Railroad Group’s (ARG) freight wagon figures for October, according to one of the rail operator’s parent companies, Genesee & Wyoming Incorporated (GWI).

ARG recorded a 10,404 wagonload increase for October 2004 compared to the same month last year.

This was largely due to a 21,498 figure for grain wagonloads during the month, an increase of 10,481 over the drought affected October 2003.

The firm also recorded an increase in other wagonload groups including iron ores and bauxite.

However, ARG recorded a significant drop in the hook and pull traffic which dropped from 2,924 wagonloads in October 2003 to 318 this month.

GWI said the higher hook and pull figure for 2003 was due to "certain short-term shipments".
