Government denies grain rail line closure

The Victorian Government is denying Opposition claims it had quietly closed a rail line that used to bring grain from Mildura to the port of Portland.

The line linking Maryborough to Ararat has not been in use since 2004.

A spokeswoman for railways minister Lynne Kosky told the ABC the line was still open, but was not in use.

This was because of a drop in demand for the transport of grain, she said.

The port of Geelong was a more convenient export point and the future of the rail corridor between Maryborough and Ararat would depend on the demand for grain export through Portland.
