Gold Coast light rail goes a step closer

Light rail could help satisfy the Gold Coast’s future transport requirements, according to a recently completed rail feasibility study.

Queensland transport minister Steve Bredhauer said preliminary findings from the study had shown that light rail had the potential to better satisfy needs criteria than alternative transport modes.

The next step in the study will include evaluating some of the short listed route options and assessing the rail’s financial, economic and environmental factors.

It is thought a light rail route between Parkwoood and Broadbeach would cost between $300m and $400m and carry more than 50,000 passengers a day.
