Eyre Peninsula Railroad owner Genesee & Wyoming Australia will transport exports from Centrex Metal’s Wilgerup hematite operation if the mine proves commercial, Centrex said today (Wednesday, February 21).

The in-principle rail freight agreement projects 2m tonnes of the iron ore a year to be sent along the Port Lincoln-Lock line, starting in the last quarter of 2008.

A siding is to be built between the existing Murdinga and Tooligee sidings, Centrex said.

Centrex managing director Gerard Anderson told Lloyd List DCN that he could not reveal the “agreed, in-principle, indicative pricing”.

“Everything is conditional on how much we put down the line and therefore how many locos and how much rolling stock that we require,” Mr Anderson said.

“We have first right of refusal over the rail tippler and some wagons.

“We wanted to get this out and consummated with Genesee & Wyoming so they would also start the process of looking at siding design, securing rail cars for us, those sort of thing, because we wish to be started exporting our first ore before Christmas next year.”
