Full steam ahead for Gold Coast stations

The Gold Coast’s new Pimpama station is targeting to be operational in 2024, with the starting date brought forward in response to significant population growth in the area and associated demand for public transport services, as well as strong community support.

Works that began in late 2021 will deliver a new signalised intersection at Bedford Road and Old Pacific Highway, access road and associated drainage, and connecting pedestrian and cycle paths.

Drainage excavation and utility relocation works within the site on the corner of the Old Pacific Highway and Mebbin Street are now underway to enable realignment of water and sewer infrastructure.

Excavation and installation of culverts under the Old Pacific Highway will commence over the coming months and will be undertaken in a staged approach to maintain traffic flow.

During these works, traffic controls will be in place along the Old Pacific Highway and Bedford Road. Traffic controls will remain in place for the duration of the works and will change during each stage.

Meanwhile, procurement activities for major construction contracts for nearby Hope Island and Merrimac stations will start in mid-2022, with the stations due to be operational in time for the first Cross River Rail services to the Gold Coast.

This month, utility investigations commenced at Hope Island and Merrimac station sites to locate and identify service utilities such as water, power and sewer lines.

Residents can expect to see an increase in workers and vehicles on site, as they undertake potholing, manhole inspections and ground surveys. Further details will be distributed to residents prior to works commencing.

Environmental investigations, including hydrology and flood modelling assessments, are currently underway at both sites and outcomes will inform the station designs as they progress.
