<p>Fremantle Ports is aiming to have 20% of its containers on rail by next year as part of a push for greater port efficiency.</p> <p>New figures released this morning (Wednesday, May 7) show that port of Fremantle has recorded a 1200% increase in the use of rail since 2002 – about 84,000 teu each year.</p> <p>Just 7,000 teu moved by rail to and from the port in 2002.</p> <p>The increase saves about 65,000 truck movements a year.</p> <p>Long-term targets set by the Western Australian Government include shifting 30% of the port’s container traffic to rail.</p> <p>Fremantle was hit hard by truck congestion during the 2006 Christmas rush, prompting a more coordinated effort by the industry last year that saw a better spread of truck operating hours and increased use of rail.</p> <p>Container throughput reach 500,000 teu last year and has been growing by as much as 20% in recent months compared with this time last year. </p> <br />
