Freight track closed after accident

Australia’s east-west rail corridor was reopened yesterday (Monday, August 5) after an Australia Southern Railroad train derailed west of Parkes, damaging 18 km of track last Thursday.

It is understood repairs are needed for around 80-90 broken rails and hundreds of sleepers need replacing.

Rerailing and track repairs were forecast to take two to three days, but work was hindered by rain.

The closure was not expected to cause serious disruptions to freight services because trains running from Sydney to Adelaide or Perth could be diverted via Melbourne.
