Free community day to launch Newcastle trams

The NSW Government has announced a free community open day next month before the new Newcastle Light Rail project opens for regular services the following day.

Monday, February 18 has been named the opening day for standard operations for the new light rail route into Newcastle’s CBD. The community open day will take place the day prior, on Sunday, February 17.

Regular services will run from 5am to 1am daily on the 2.7-kilometre, wire-free route, which includes six stops.

“With 4,000 new homes and almost 8,000 more jobs expected in the city centre by 2036, Newcastle Light Rail will play an important role in keeping this growing city moving, and reducing congestion well into the future,” state transport minister Andrew Constance said.

“We’ve delivered this project faster than anyone anticipated, and it will be a proud moment for the premier and me when services begin next month.”

Constance said the community open day was designed to thank locals for tolerating the construction phase of the project.

“The open day will be one big celebration, with something for all ages and tastes at unique events near each of Newcastle Light Rail’s six stops.”
