Fortescue taps McConnell Dowell to build Port Hedland facilities

<p>Construction and engineering concern McConnell Dowell won a port infrastructure development deal for Port Hedland from Fortescue Metals Group, the iron ore miner said yesterday (Monday, September 11).</p> <p>The value of the deal for port and rail development work at the Anderson Point site was not disclosed, but was &#8220agreed at the budgeted price, thereby maintaining the integrity of the overall project budget&#8221.</p> <p>"It represents approximately 10% of the total construction and procurement budget and is one of the largest (in value) project agreements," Fortescue said.</p> <p>McConnell Dowell had already worked on the design component under a separate contract, now rolled into the larger contract.</p> <p>In May, McConnell Dowel was awarded the Phase B contract for the Dampier port upgrade project by Hamersley Iron. In the same month, it won deals to build an oil storage terminal and two jetties in Singapore.</p> <p>In April, the firm won a deal for the mechanical works for the inloading facility at the Dalrymple Bay Coal Handling Facility.</p> <p>Last year’s Robe River tug harbour is also a company project.</p> <p>Fortescue also said it would build a 455-room motel to house construction workers and surplus rooms would be available to third parties.</p> <br />
