Construction and engineering concern McConnell Dowell won a port infrastructure development deal for Port Hedland from Fortescue Metals Group, the iron ore miner said yesterday (Monday, September 11).

The value of the deal for port and rail development work at the Anderson Point site was not disclosed, but was “agreed at the budgeted price, thereby maintaining the integrity of the overall project budget”.

"It represents approximately 10% of the total construction and procurement budget and is one of the largest (in value) project agreements," Fortescue said.

McConnell Dowell had already worked on the design component under a separate contract, now rolled into the larger contract.

In May, McConnell Dowel was awarded the Phase B contract for the Dampier port upgrade project by Hamersley Iron. In the same month, it won deals to build an oil storage terminal and two jetties in Singapore.

In April, the firm won a deal for the mechanical works for the inloading facility at the Dalrymple Bay Coal Handling Facility.

Last year’s Robe River tug harbour is also a company project.

Fortescue also said it would build a 455-room motel to house construction workers and surplus rooms would be available to third parties.
