The first of 12 new trains for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport Line has arrived in Sydney.
The next-generation trains are being manufactured by Siemens Mobility at its production plant in Vienna, Austria.
Each train is built in three separate carriages and will be transported via a specialised cargo ship, with the journey typically taking between 45 to 61 days.
The first train recently travelled 23,000 kilometres from Vienna to Port Kembla, before the carriages were individually transported by truck to Sydney Metro’s new Stabling and Maintenance Facility at Orchard Hills. Once there, the train was assembled.
The trains come with a range of features which will facilitate the high-volume movement of passengers travelling to and from the airport with luggage, as well as travellers with disabilities.
These include accessible centre aisles that are approximately 30 centimetres wider than those on M1 Line trains, as well as room for luggage storage below seats.
High resolution displays show real-time flight information via a direct feed from the airport.
There are multiple seating choices in each carriage, including front and rear facing seating for groups, as well as traditional sideways seating, designated wheelchair spaces and accessible areas. Each train has four bicycle storage spaces.
Another standout design feature is the seating upholstery, which has been created by Indigenous artists Leanne Watson Redpath, Tina Barahanos and Alexandra Byrne (BBR).
The artwork draws on ancient pathways and cultural journeys across Dharug Country and was chosen to reflect the communities along the metro line.
